First off, get her away from other fish. As you now know, adult guppy fish eat baby guppy fish, so if your pregnant guppy drops her fry in a tank with other adult guppies, there is little hope unless you have a LOT of live plants and hiding spots.

This is my strategy for guppy births: I use a breeder box that has two main compartments; an upper compartment where the mamma guppy goes and a lower compartment where the guppy fry drop down into once born. The floor of the upper compartment is shaped like a “V” with a slit down the very bottom. The slit is too small for the mamma guppy to go through, but it is perfect for baby guppies. You see, when guppy fry are born their swim bladders are not filled with air yet, so unless they swim really hard they will just sink down to the bottom. That is why the “V” shape is great because the newly born baby guppy fish will slide down the slope to the opening and fall through to their own little area.

You have three options for breeder boxes here. You can buy a breeder box with an open bottom and put the box (with the mamma in it) into a baby tank (this is what I usually do) so that the babies once born can fall through the slit and down into their very own little baby tank. This method does not need special ventilation or oxygenation because the water in the tank can circulate in the box.

You can also get an enclosed breeder box so that when the guppy fry are born they fall down into a separate area below that is closed off from the rest of the tank. If you use this method you can put the breeder box in a tank with adults because the babies can not get out and the adult guppy fish can not get in. This type of box comes with an aeration hookup that also works as a pump so the fish inside get oxygenated water. Usually the air pump is sold separately so remember that.

Lastly, you can buy a breeder net. A breeder net is a little square or rectangular frame with netting around the outside. You can put your mamma guppy inside it, but there is no separate compartment for the guppy babies to drop down into, so you need to take the mom out within a few hours of her giving birth to all her fry or she might eat them (See Are Guppy Fish Cannibals?). You can put a breeder net in the same tank with adult guppy fish because the netting is too small for them to get in or out. You also do not need to aerate a breeder net because the tank water can flow through the netting.

When the mamma fish is in labor, make sure your temperature is warm; about 80 degrees is what I use for my mamma fish. This will help her muscles relax and her birth will be a bit easier.

Remember that a pregnant guppy fish is extremely susceptible to stress when she is in labor. Keep the tank environment as calm as possible, don’t move her about a lot, and try your best not to startle or scare her by making vibrations or approaching the tank quickly. An itty bitty pinch of aquarium salt can be helpful to calm her, just make sure you read the dosage on the aquarium salt container.

Now you know what to do and how to care for her when your pregnant guppy fish is in labor. By keeping your fish from becoming stressed and providing a quiet, safe place for her to drop her fry, you are doing everything right to ensure a healthy batch of guppy fry and a flourishing guppy mom.

The first one is diet. You need to be sure that your pregnant guppy has a well- balanced diet. I always have several different types of food next to my tanks (see Guppy Diet) because feeding your pregnant guppy the same thing all the time will be a good way to give her a nutrient deficiency or make her abort or absorb her young. Some good types of food to use for variety are:
* Flake food
* Tiny pellets
* Algae discs
* Tubifex worms
* Bloodworms
* Krill
* Brine shrimp
* Daphnia

The second thing you need to do (although doing this with all your guppies is a good thing) is make sure your pregnant guppy does not get all stressed out. Make sure there are no troublemakers in the tank, that she has at least one little place to hide if she wants to, and that she is not getting violently pestered by males. You should already by this point know what type of water conditions guppies need to live in, so make sure your ammonia, nitrite, phosphate, etc. levels are not stressing her out either. If she is getting stressed out by all the other fish, put her in a divided area of the tank, or give her her own little tank (Important! Make sure the tank is cycled and has a filter and a heater, you can’t just flop her in a bowl and call it good).

Third, make sure your tank environment is what it should be for guppy fish. Keep the heat between 75 and 82, make sure the water is clean (water changes!) and free of lots of bacteria and parasites, make sure there is no chlorine in your tank, make sure the fish are not overcrowded, and as I mentioned above, ensure that the water quality is good. A little bit of aquarium salt can help guppy stress too, but do not add too much, or the fish will die. Each pack has its own instructions, but the general dose is 1 tablespoon per every 5 gallons of water.

If you do these things you are set to become a guppy godparent without much trouble at all, because guppies are like the rabbits of the fish world, they breed like mad.

However, many do start with just a small fish tank, so we want to give you a list of items to use with your small aquarium so that you can increase your chances for success in tropical fishkeeping.

Below is a typical start-up kit for a small 2 gallon mini-bow aquarium. It comes with a lighted hood, a small packet of sample fish food, an undergravel filter and a small air pump. You will need to get some other items as well for your aquarium. As mentioned previously, a small tank can be more work than a large tank because you really have to stay on top of those water changes to prevent the small aquarium from becoming too polluted. Here is a list of the bare minimum things to have for any small aquarium:

• A couple of replacement media cartridges and small filter.
• Substrate ( gravel)
• Small aquarium vacuum
• Fish Food
• Small fish net
• Aquarium water test kit (Get a test kit that tests the ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels)
• 5 gallon bucket
• Small aquarium air pump (used in conjunction with the filter)

STEP 1: Realize the responsibility involved.
Learning how to set up a fish tank is not all that difficult, but there are some steps you should follow. First, you must realize a few things about an aquarium setup. A tropical fish tank is just like having a dog or a cat when it comes to the amount of effort on your part. In order to have a successful freshwater tropical fish tank you will have to work at it. Once a week, or at most once every two weeks, you will need to perform some kind of maintenance on the tank. Most of the time you will be performing water changes. You will also have to feed your fish at least once a day. Setting up and running a fish tank does cost money. There are recurring expenses such as replacing filter media, buying food, etc. Check out the Freshwater vs. Saltwater Aquarium page to get an idea of the setup costs involved. If you are up to the challenge, please proceed!

STEP 2: Decide on an aquarium size.
It’s a good idea to have in mind what kind of fish you want to keep before you purchase an aquarium. Some fish only grow to be an inch or two, whereas other types of tropical fish can grow 12 or 13 inches or more in length! Knowing what kind of fish you want will help you decide the size of the tank they will need. If this is your first time with an aquarium, it may be a good idea to start with a 10 or 20 gallon aquarium setup for now and stock it with some smaller and hardier species.

STEP 3: Decide on the aquarium’s location.
Place your aquarium in an area where the light and temperature of the tank won’t be affected by external sources such as windows and heater vents. Sunlight that enters the room through an unshaded window could affect the temperature of your tank. This could also lead to green algae problems for your tank down the road. You will want to place your aquarium on a stand that will be able to hold its total weight. You also want to be sure that the floor is able to support the total weight of the aquarium and stand. A good rule of thumb for determining the total weight of a full aquarium is 10 pounds per gallon of water. For example, a 55-gallon tank will weigh approximately 550 pounds when filled with water!

STEP 4: Buy your aquarium and equipment.
Now is a good time to decide on the type of aquarium filter you will want to use. You will also need to purchase a heater capable of heating the tank size you have. Buy the gravel, plants, a power strip and other decorations. A good rule of thumb for the amount of gravel that you will need is 1 to 1.5 pounds of gravel per gallon of water.

STEP 5: Set up your aquarium and stand.
Wash out your tank with water only! Do not use soap or detergents. Soap residue left behind will be harmful for your tropical fish. If you are going to use an under gravel filter (not recommended) now would be the time to set it up as well.

STEP 6: Wash Gravel, plants and decorations.
Be sure to wash the gravel thoroughly before adding it to your tank. An easy way to do this is to put some of the rocks in a pasta strainer and wash them out in your bath tub. Then place the clean gravel in a clean 5-gallon bucket for transport to the aquarium. After adding the gravel you can place your plants and decorations.

STEP 7: Add water to the aquarium.
To avoid messing up your gravel and plants, you can place a plate or saucer in the middle of your aquarium and direct the water flow onto the plate. Use room temperature water when filling. To remove the chlorine and chloramine, use something like Tetra AquaSafe for Aquariums. Don’t completely fill up the aquarium until you are sure of the layout of your decorations. Otherwise, when you place your arm in to move stuff around water is going to spill over. Doh!

STEP 8: Set up equipment.
Install your heater but don’t plug it in until the thermostat in the heater has adjusted to the water temperature. This usually takes about 15 minutes or so. Hook up your filter and any other equipment you have, then top off the aquarium water to just under the hood lip. Place your hood and tank light on the aquarium and then check your power cords to be sure that they are free of water. I would also recommend using a drip loop on all of the power cords to be extra cautious. For more information on safety, read this great article on aquarium electrical safety. Plug all of the equipment into a power strip and then “turn on” the aquarium.

STEP 9. Wait, wait, wait and then wait some more.
I know, you want to add some fish. But, in order to do this right you must wait until your aquarium has cycled before adding any fish. There are ways of speeding up this process. Check out the nitrogen cycle page to learn more about starting the nitrogen cycle and how to speed it up. If you must use fish to cycle, try to get a hardier species like the zebra danio or cherry barb. You may notice your fish tank cycle kicking in gear if you start to get some white cloudy aquarium water after a few days.

STEP 10. Add tropical fish.
Only add one or two fish at a time. Adding a couple fish at a time gives your filtration system the time needed to take on the increased biological load that the new fish introduce. When you bring the fish home let the bag float in the tank for about 15 minutes so that the fish can become acclimated to the temperature and pH of the aquarium water. After 5 minutes of floating the bag you should add some of the aquarium water to the bag so that the fish can become acclimated to the pH level in the aquarium. This will help reduce the amount of stress imposed on the fish. Stressed fish often leads to dead or diseased fish! Don’t feed your fish on the first day. They probably wouldn’t eat any food on the first day anyway. Let them get acquainted with their new home.

STEP 11. Get ready for regular maintenance.
Be prepared to spend some time once every week or two to clean your tank. Performing regular water changes will reduce the nitrate levels and keep your tropical fish happy and healthy.

Lọc nướcThông dụng nhất có lẽ là hệ thống lọc sử dụng bọt biển. Nó gồm 1 máy hút và 1 miếng bông lọc được đặt trong hộp để lọc các chất bẩn. Và bạn chỉ cần giặt nó trong nước ấm mỗi tuần 1 lần là đủ. Miếng bông lọc sẽ giữ tất cả rác thải ra trong hồ cá !
Máy bơm không khí
Bạn cũng nên có 1 máy bơm khí cho những hồ cá của mình. Nó sẽ giúp không khí lưu thông, làm tăng lượng oxy trong nước, cá sẽ mau lớn hơn

Ánh sáng
Nếu có nhiều bể, giải pháp tốt nhất là sử dụng 4 bóng đèn huỳnh quang hơn là phải thắp sáng cho từng bể riêng biệt. Ánh sáng nên được giữ 10 – 14 tiếng/ngày. Bạn nên mở đèn 1 giờ trước lần ăn đầu tiên và tắt đèn 1 giờ sau lần ăn cuối cùng

Nước
Nước là yếu tố quan trọng nhất để nuôi guppy với số lượng lớn. Nếu bạn dùng nước máy, nên phơi ngoài nắng 1 ngày trước khi dùng để khí clo trong nước thoát ra hết. Trong trường hợp khẩn cấp, bạn cũng có thể thay nước cho hồ cá bằng nước máy chưa “phơi” nhưng phải cho sủi bọt trong hồ để khí clo thoát lên nhanh hơn

Amoniac, nguyên nhân số 1 dẫn đến cái chết cho lũ cá, gây ra bởi tình trạng nuôi cá quá đông trong 1 hồ, cho ăn quá nhiều dẫn đến thừa thức ăn, do nước xấu hay thiếu oxy..Nếu nghi ngờ có sự hiện diện của amoniac, bạn nên thay khoảng 1/3 nước hồ và cho sủi bọt thật nhiều

Độ cứng và độ pH cũng rất quan trọng. Guppy thích nước hơi cứng và độ pH từ 6.8 – 7.8 (tốt nhất là 7.0). Vì vậy mà bạn có thể nuôi chúng vô tư trong các hồ xi măng (và có vẻ chúng chỉ thực sự lớn và sinh sản khi được nuôi trong hồ xi măng). Tuyệt đối không được thay đổi đột ngột độ pH và độ cứng của nước, nếu không cá sẽ chết nhiều. Nếu bạn muốn thay đổi thì sự thay đổi này phải diễn ra một cách từ từ !

Thay nước
Việc thay nước có thể tạo ra hoặc giết chết những con cá tuyệt đẹp. Việc loại bỏ phân và thức ăn thừa trong hồ cá là rất quan trọng. Những người nuôi cá thành công khuyên rằng bạn nên thay 30 – 40% lượng nước hàng tuần. Một số người thay nước hàng ngày với số lượng là 10% nước trong hồ. Việc này giúp cá bột lớn nhanh hơn và to hơn. Nó cũng làm giảm lượng amoniac

Nhiệt độ
Guppy sống trong nhiệt độ từ 75 đến 82 độ F (tốt nhất là 78). Nếu trời lạnh, bạn có thể dùng cây sưởi để giữ nhiệt độ trong hồ được ổn định. Nếu có nhiều hồ, bạn có thể dùng bếp lò để sưởi

Cho cá vào hồ sau khi mua
Việc đầu tiên cần làm sau khi mua cá là hãy thả chúng vào 1 cái hồ nhỏ và nhớ là dùng nguồn nước ở nơi mà bạn đã mua chúng (khi mua bạn nên xin thêm nhiều nước vào). Cứ 20 – 30 phút, bạn đổ thêm 1 ít nước lấy trong hồ nhà vào hồ nuôi tạm. Đến khi hồ tạm đầy khoảng 3/4, hút 1/2 nước ra khỏi hồ và thay bằng nước hồ nhà. Bạn cứ làm việc này 2 – 3 lần trong vòng 1 – 2 giờ. Lúc này, bạn có thể thả cá vào trong hồ nhà được rồi. Đừng lo lắng nếu anh lính mới cảm thấy sợ sệt và lẩn trốn ! Nếu chúng thấy hoảng sợ, đừng cho chúng ăn trong vòng 24 – 48 giờ. Nếu chúng có vẻ không ăn sau đó thì bạn cũng không nên cho thức ăn vào hồ vì việc này sẽ mau chóng làm bẩn nước hồ. Đừng lo lắng vì việc này là bình thường và có thể mất cả tuần để chú guppy mới bơi lượn và xử sự như những chú guppy bình thường khác

Mẻ cá bột đầu tiên
Sau 4 – 6 tuần thì trò vui sẽ thực sự bắt đầu. Vào thời kì này, cá mái đã sẵn sàng đẻ con. Bạn nên vớt nó sang một bể nhỏ hơn, cho vào 1 chút rong để có chỗ cho cá con lẩn trốn…mẹ chúng. Khi cho ăn, bạn nên cho hơi nhiều thức ăn. Lí thuyết nói rằng khi được cho ăn, những chú cá con nên được bao quanh bởi thức ăn thay vì phải bơi đi tìm. Và bạn cũng nên nhớ cho cá mẹ ăn đầy đủ trong thời gian này để tránh hậu quả đáng tiếc có thể xảy ra. Sau khi cá mẹ đẻ hết, vớt nó trở về hồ cũ với … cá trống và tiếp tục nuôi lũ cá con trong bể nhỏ trong vòng 1 vài tuần

Cho cá ăn
Từ lúc mới đẻ đến 6 tuần : Cá bột nên được cho ăn tôm con mới nở. Bạn cũng nên cho vào hồ một ít muối. Việc này sẽ làm cá sống khỏe hơn và làm tôm con có thể sống lâu hơn. Sau 2 ngày, bạn có thể cho cá ăn thức ăn khô, nhớ là phải tán ra thật nhuyễn và nên dùng 1 loại thức ăn cố định thôi.

Từ 6 tuần tuổi đến lúc trưởng thành: Việc cho ăn thích hợp và 1 khẩu phần cân bằng chính là chìa khóa để dẫn đến thành công, nếu bạn cho cá ăn không tốt thì sẽ chẳng có bàn thắng nào được ghi ! Một khẩu phần cân bằng phải thoả mãn mọi nhu cầu về chất dinh dưỡng của cá. Giai đoạn quan trọng nhất trong cuộc đời 1 chú guppy là 3 tháng đầu đời. Cho ăn không phù hợp trong 3 tháng này sẽ ảnh hưởng không tốt đến sự phát triển của cá sau này. Bạn nên cho cá ăn đơn giản, nhưng phải thường xuyên và đều đặn, nên cho ăn từ 6 – 8 lần/ngày. Một khẩu phần có sự thay đổi đa dạng giữa thực phẩm khô và tươi là rất cần thiết cho sự phát triển của cá. Hãy chắc rằng bạn đã tìm được loại thức ăn tốt nhất và đừng nên quá mặc cả trong chuyện này. Tôm con, trùn chỉ, lăng quăng, bo bo …là nguồn cung cấp protein động vật rất tốt. Tảo và salad có thể cho cá nguồn protein thực vật chúng cần. 2 loại thức ăn có zá trị nhất là trùn chỉ và tôm con. Một khẩu phần tốt nên bắt đầu bằng tôm con, sau đó cả ngày cho chúng ăn thức ăn khô, và kết thúc bằng một bữa trùn chỉ thịnh soạn trước khi đi ngủ.

Cách nở trứng tôm : Cho trứng tôm vào 1 chai nhỏ, chứa nước mặn (2 muỗng canh muối cho 1 lít nước) và cho sục khí liên tục trong vòng 18 – 20 giờ. Sau đó bạn có thể vớt tôm ra cho cá ăn. Tốt nhất là khi mua trứng tôm, nên hỏi kĩ người bán và “đọc kĩ hướng dẫn sử dụng trước khi dùng”

Hãy cố gắng cho cá ăn đều đặn nhiều bữa nhỏ mỗi ngày ( 2 trong số đó nên là thức ăn tươi). Không được cho ăn thừa và giữ cho đáy hồ được tự do khỏi thức ăn thừa. Nhiều người nuôi cá thả catfish (Corydoras) vào trong hồ để ăn thức ăn thừa. Vài người nghĩ rằng những con catfish này sẽ ăn cá con. Nếu bạn nghĩ vậy thì có thể chờ cá con lớn lên chút ít rồi thả chúng vào

Gây giống cá
Khi bạn mua về 3 con cá (1 trống/2 mái), bạn có thể tạo ra 2 dòng cá song song nhau. Sau 1 vài lần nhân giống, sẽ có đủ sự khác biệt giữa các dòng và bạn có thể nhân chéo 2 dòng để giữ cho cá của bạn luôn khoẻ mạnh. Tất cả những người nuôi guppy cần phải biết cách lựa chọn cá. Nuối tất cả cá chung với nhau sẽ làm giống mau chóng bị thoái hoá.

Việc tách bầy và chọn lọc có hể thực hiện sau 6 tuần đầu. Lúc này bạn đã có thể phân biệt được đâu là cá trống, cá mái. Hãy tách những con trống và mái sang những bể riêng để tránh sự lai tạo ngoài ý muốn. Bạn cũng nên loại bỏ những con cá xấu, dị dạng hay yếu ra khỏi bầy. Và không nên để số lượng từ 10 – 20 con cá trong 1 bể nhỏ 10 gallon. Mật độ cá nên ở mức 1 con/1 gallon để đạt được sự phát triển tối đa. Thời điểm để chọn giống cá cũng còn phụ thuộc vào giống cá bạn đang nuôi. vd: cá màu đỏ, xanh lá cây, xanh da trời lớn nhanh và có thể được lựa chọn sau 3 tháng. Ngược lại, những con cá màu vàng hay trắng mất nhiều thời gian hơn để trưởng thành, do đó bạn phải chờ 4 – 5 tháng để có thể tiến hành việc chọn lựa

[b]Lựa chọn cá trống:[b] Để lựa chọn cá trống, bạn thực hiện các bước sau:
1. Chọn ra con lớn nhất trong bầy. Hãy chọn những con có cuống đuôi to, dày, vì chúng có thể mang được những chiếc đuôi to

2. Chọn những con có đuôi hình tam giác. Chọn những con dài lưng (lưng có hình bình hành, tròn ở góc)

3. Lưng và đuôi nên trùng màu hay hoạ tiết

4. Loại bỏ những con cá có xương sống uốn cong, đầu phẳng hay những con có màu sắc không đẹp

Khi thực hiện theo các bước này, bạn sẽ chọn được cho mình những con cá tốt nhất để tiếp tục phát triển, và nên nhớ rằng mật độ cá không được quá 1 gallon 1 con

Lựa chọn cá mái: Những con cá mái thường được lựa chọn sau 4-5 tháng. Các bước tiến hành như sau:

“Shimmies” or “clamped fins” is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of disease or fish stress. Because it can have so many different causes like columnaris or the different forms of flukes, this entry in the wiki is meant to provide a general description of this condition.

Symptoms and Behavioral Signs

A guppy has clamped fins that it holds close to its body, and its caudal find is folded. It hangs near the surface, relatively immobile. It may shimmy or swim somewhat erratically. The following symptoms may selectively appear:

• Fins clamped
• Guppy shimmies
• Fish is shy or hiding
• Fish lack appetite
• Fish is still or inactive

These symptoms can describe a variety of parasitic diseases that can only be properly identified with a microscope. The problem with treating shimmies or clamped fins without knowing the cause is that you may subject the guppies to chemical stress or adversely affect the water conditions.

Causative Condition

High ammonia, nitrite or nitrate levels in the tank. Low oxygen levels. High level of organic waste in the tank. pH levels out of range (less than 7.0 or more than 8.4) or a recent sudden change in the pH, temperature or hardness levels. If the problem is confined to one or several tanks, the chances are that the nitrogen cycle is out of whack in those selected tanks. This may be due to overfeeding or to a mechanical failure in the filtration system. If the symptoms appear after a period of stability, and they appear in more than one tank, and there has been no recent introduction of new guppies to the community, you can probably assume that the guppies have been overfed.

Diagnosis

If the fish are scratching or flashing it is an indication of irritation of their skin, and could be due to external parasites. If the fish are swimming erratically, it is probably a parasitic disease. Examine the fish for any other signs of abnormalities or disease. If clamped fins are the only symptom, then it is probable water conditions are bad. If they are hanging near the surface, and there is not other signs of disease, than it is probably poor water quality.

Look on the bottom of the tank. Do you see a lot of mulm compared to other tanks? Is there uneaten food on the bottom? Is the water cloudy? Are the filters clogged? Is the filter water flow restricted? These are signs of overfeeding or the failure of the nitrogen cycle.

Check your food supply. Does it smell bad?

Check the water parameters. If the chemistry in your tank is not suitable for guppies, correct the situation, following the steps outlined in the next section.
Another sign is the specificity of the disease. Some strains of guppies are more susceptible to clamping or shimmying than others. Our recommendation is to delete the strain from your genetic pool. If you cannot do this, outcross it.

Treatment

I don’t recommend medications for this condition because it can be do to so many different causes and disease organisms. However if the condition persists, try the 3 Step Treatment Program just to eliminate the usual parasitic suspects. However, the longterm fix is to feed the guppies high quality fish food, do regular water changes and maintain healthy biological filtration.
