First off, get her away from other fish. As you now know, adult guppy fish eat baby guppy fish, so if your pregnant guppy drops her fry in a tank with other adult guppies, there is little hope unless you have a LOT of live plants and hiding spots.

This is my strategy for guppy births: I use a breeder box that has two main compartments; an upper compartment where the mamma guppy goes and a lower compartment where the guppy fry drop down into once born. The floor of the upper compartment is shaped like a “V” with a slit down the very bottom. The slit is too small for the mamma guppy to go through, but it is perfect for baby guppies. You see, when guppy fry are born their swim bladders are not filled with air yet, so unless they swim really hard they will just sink down to the bottom. That is why the “V” shape is great because the newly born baby guppy fish will slide down the slope to the opening and fall through to their own little area.

You have three options for breeder boxes here. You can buy a breeder box with an open bottom and put the box (with the mamma in it) into a baby tank (this is what I usually do) so that the babies once born can fall through the slit and down into their very own little baby tank. This method does not need special ventilation or oxygenation because the water in the tank can circulate in the box.

You can also get an enclosed breeder box so that when the guppy fry are born they fall down into a separate area below that is closed off from the rest of the tank. If you use this method you can put the breeder box in a tank with adults because the babies can not get out and the adult guppy fish can not get in. This type of box comes with an aeration hookup that also works as a pump so the fish inside get oxygenated water. Usually the air pump is sold separately so remember that.

Lastly, you can buy a breeder net. A breeder net is a little square or rectangular frame with netting around the outside. You can put your mamma guppy inside it, but there is no separate compartment for the guppy babies to drop down into, so you need to take the mom out within a few hours of her giving birth to all her fry or she might eat them (See Are Guppy Fish Cannibals?). You can put a breeder net in the same tank with adult guppy fish because the netting is too small for them to get in or out. You also do not need to aerate a breeder net because the tank water can flow through the netting.

When the mamma fish is in labor, make sure your temperature is warm; about 80 degrees is what I use for my mamma fish. This will help her muscles relax and her birth will be a bit easier.

Remember that a pregnant guppy fish is extremely susceptible to stress when she is in labor. Keep the tank environment as calm as possible, don’t move her about a lot, and try your best not to startle or scare her by making vibrations or approaching the tank quickly. An itty bitty pinch of aquarium salt can be helpful to calm her, just make sure you read the dosage on the aquarium salt container.

Now you know what to do and how to care for her when your pregnant guppy fish is in labor. By keeping your fish from becoming stressed and providing a quiet, safe place for her to drop her fry, you are doing everything right to ensure a healthy batch of guppy fry and a flourishing guppy mom.

The first one is diet. You need to be sure that your pregnant guppy has a well- balanced diet. I always have several different types of food next to my tanks (see Guppy Diet) because feeding your pregnant guppy the same thing all the time will be a good way to give her a nutrient deficiency or make her abort or absorb her young. Some good types of food to use for variety are:
* Flake food
* Tiny pellets
* Algae discs
* Tubifex worms
* Bloodworms
* Krill
* Brine shrimp
* Daphnia

The second thing you need to do (although doing this with all your guppies is a good thing) is make sure your pregnant guppy does not get all stressed out. Make sure there are no troublemakers in the tank, that she has at least one little place to hide if she wants to, and that she is not getting violently pestered by males. You should already by this point know what type of water conditions guppies need to live in, so make sure your ammonia, nitrite, phosphate, etc. levels are not stressing her out either. If she is getting stressed out by all the other fish, put her in a divided area of the tank, or give her her own little tank (Important! Make sure the tank is cycled and has a filter and a heater, you can’t just flop her in a bowl and call it good).

Third, make sure your tank environment is what it should be for guppy fish. Keep the heat between 75 and 82, make sure the water is clean (water changes!) and free of lots of bacteria and parasites, make sure there is no chlorine in your tank, make sure the fish are not overcrowded, and as I mentioned above, ensure that the water quality is good. A little bit of aquarium salt can help guppy stress too, but do not add too much, or the fish will die. Each pack has its own instructions, but the general dose is 1 tablespoon per every 5 gallons of water.

If you do these things you are set to become a guppy godparent without much trouble at all, because guppies are like the rabbits of the fish world, they breed like mad.

There is a removable “V” shaped trap in it which serves to separate the mother from the babies. When the mother fish has babies they fall through the slot in the “V” into the bottom of the box. After the mother is finished having babies, you can remove the “V” trap and the mother so that they babies have more room to grow. Some people have had bad experiences with breeder boxes and now only use a breeder net. It is also a good idea to purchase some real or plastic breeding grass for the top of the aquarium. The breeding grass is just in case the mother gives birth before you have a chance to put her in the breeder box. The young babies instinctively will swim to the top of the aquarium and the breeder grass provides a great hiding place so they won’t get eaten by the bigger fish in your tank.

To feed your new arrivals you can use finely crushed flake food. Using your fingers, you can rub the flakes into a fine powder. Some only feed live foods such as baby brine shrimp. Live foods would definitely be the best way to go, but for most this is simply not feasible. Crushed or powdered flake food will suffice. Try to feed the babies 3 very small meals per day. You will invariably feed too much and the excess food will drop to the bottom of the tank or breeder box. To clean a breeder box we like to take a 3 ft. length of aquarium tubing and a small bucket.

Use the tubing as a siphon to clean the bottom of thebreeder box. Be careful not to siphon any baby fish.

Try to perform 25% water changes weekly for your baby guppies. This will aid in the optimal growth of your babytropical fish. Mollies

A Molly is a great fish for a beginner hobbyist. These fish are fairly hearty and will withstand adversity and conditions well so if you make a mistake you can have a good chance of you for surviving. You want to be sure that you have a least a 15 gallon tank and you have a good heater as these fish like the temperature to be between 70 and 82°F.

There are two general types of Mollies to choose from the Sail fin and the short finned. Most typically what you will find a short finned Mollies – the Black Molly and the gold dust Molly at your pet store. This Sail fins are much larger than have a striking shape but are harder to care for.

Mollies can be fed the regular flake food that you find in the fish store but you might want to think about mixing in some freeze dried blood worms and even throwing in a few black worms or two for a treat. If your finish tank does not have a lot of algae you’ll want to also supplement their diet with spirulina flakes.
When keeping Mollies it’s important to have more females than males. other fish that will coexist good in a fish tank with mollies include the Plecostomus, Swordtails, Angelfish, Corydoras, Catfish, Silver Tip Tetras, Red Serapes and Black Skirts.

if given the proper environment and care Mollies can grow to be five inches long and live to be five years old.

Fancy Guppies

The male fancy guppy is beautiful with a long flowing tail light comes in a variety of beautiful colors – golds, greens, blues, Reds, blacks. The female, on the other hand is rather plain coming in grayish brown. Guppies breed quite often, in fact every month the females will have a new batch of babies. You may even wish to get more tanks in time, to help with the breeding and separation. Fancy Guppies like warmer aquarium waters. You should keep your temperature set between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and consider adding a tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water in the tank. Most livebearers Guppies fair better with the salt added.

While Fancy Guppies can survive on just floating flake food and freeze dried bloodworms, they will become stronger and hardier if fed some frozen brine shrimp or Black Worms from time to time.

When you put Fancy Guppies into your aquarium, you’ll want to keep twice as many females as male Fancy Guppies. You can add other fish that are compatible, including Small Tetras (Neons), Honey Gourami, Cory Catfish, Glass Fish, African Dwarf Frogs and Ghost Shrimp.

Many stores will try to sell Mollies and Guppies together, but most of the larger Mollies will attack Guppies and are not really compatible in an aquarium together.

You do not want to keep Swordtails and Platies in a tank with Fancy Guppies, either. They just do not get along. Guppies should be placed into aquariums with smaller tank mates.

Fancy Guppies have a short lifespan of about 3 years. The males grow to be about 2″, and females will grow a little longer at an average of 2.5″ long. Sometimes Fancy Guppies will have a longer lifespan with outstanding aquarium care, and there are even instances where the fish have gotten bigger than their average sizes.

When acclimating your guppies to the fish tank, be sure to float the bag they came in, in your fish tank water for 20 minutes then slowly introduce some of the fish tank water into the bag -little by litte before releasing them into the tank. This will give your new fish the chance to adapt slowly to it’s new environment.
